MRI Contrast Guidelines

In order to administer Gadolinium contrast for patients needing MRI procedures BAB Radiology has established the following protocol.

BUN and Creatinine levels are required for:

  • ALL contrast enhanced MRA’s requiring over 20cc’s of Gadolinium
  • ANY patients with a history of renal disease or renal failure (for any dosage).
  • ANY patient who is a known diabetic over the age of 60 or who has had diabetes for more than 30 years (for any dosage).

Note:

  • Dialysis patients must have Creatinine levels and follow the GFU guidelines.
  • Patients who have been hospitalized for severe contrast reactions in the past, or hospitalized for severe asthma or severe allergies, should be pre-medicated with Prednisone before Gadolinium injection.
  • Blood work is not required for patients who are scheduled for routine, single dose contrast studies (ie... Spine MRI w/contrast) who do not fit the criteria above.
  • Over age 60, unless renal failure, renal insufficiency or diabetic.
