Examination Preparation
MRI
When you make your appointment, please tell us if you are pregnant, have aneurysm clips or cardiac pacemaker, have a history of metal fragments or shrapnel, or have a drug infusion device, recent tattoo's or piercing.
MRA's, MR of the Abdomen and Pelvis, MRA Run-off's or MRCP's
Nothing to eat or drink four hours prior
ABDOMINAL/PELVIC/CHEST/HEAD/EXAMINATIONS CT WITH CONTRAST
Nothing to eat or drink, smoke or chew prior to six hours prior to the examination.
GALLBLADDER SERIES/Sonography
No food or drink from midnight until the time of examination.
BARIUM ENEMA
Patient is to purchase Fleet Barium Enema Prep Kit #3 and follow the 24-hour preparation. Follow instructions from the kit.
HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAM
Appointment should be made 7 to 10 days from the start of the patient's menstrual cycle. No intercourse from onset of meses until after the exam. You may experience mild, period like cramps and you may have light bleeding after the exam.
INTRAVENOUS UROGRAPHY (IVP)
For adults, one bottle of citrate of magnesium in the evening prior to the exam. Nothing to eat or drink from midnight to prior to the date of the examination. Light supper is approved (evening before the exam.)
CAT SCAN OF THE ABDOMEN AND PELVIS
Patients may need to come in to the office prior to the appointment date and pick up the Oral Contrast, if required by the physician.
SONOGRAPHY-ULTRASOUND
ABDOMINAL/GALLBALADDER ULTRASONOGRAPHY
Nothing to eat or drink, smoke or chew from midnight the evening before.
OBSTETRICAL OR PELVIC ULTRASONOGRAPHY
Four eight-ounce glasses of water (32 ounces) 1 hour prior to the examination. Do not urinate prior to examination.
MAMMOGRAPHY AND DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY
If possible, bring any previous mammograms performed at another office or hospital. Wear a 2-piece garment. Do not use any powders, deodorant, perfume or lotions before the mammogram.
NUCLEAR TESTING
THALLIUM STRESS
No solid food or caffeine (not even decaffeinated soda's) for six hours prior to the exam. Take all medications unless your physician gives you other instructions. Wear sneakers. Patient will return in 2-4 hours after initial scanning. Please bring a list of your current medication when you arrive for your test.
PERSANTINE THALLIUM STRESS
No solid food six hours prior to the test. No caffeine for 24 hours prior to test. No persantine (Dipyridamole) for 24 hours prior to test. No nitroglycerin, procardia (Nifedipine), Verapamil (Calan, Isoptin) or Cardizem (Diltiazem) on the morning of the test. No Theodur, Choledyl, Slophyllin or other Theophylline medications for 25 hours prior to test. Please consult with your physician regarding these instructions.
THALLIUM REST/GATED REST
No solids or liquids for 6 hours prior to exam
GATED STRESS
No solids or liquids for 6 hours prior to exam. Wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes.
THYROID
No thyroid medication for two weeks prior to exam. No shellfish of any kind, no salt, no multi-vitamins, no steroids 48 hours prior to exam. No procedures requiring contrast for six weeks prior.
FLUOROSCOPY
G.I. SERIES/ESOPHAGRAM/SMALL BOWEL
Nothing to eat or drink after Midnight the evening before the exam.
LIVER-SPLEEN SCAN/RENAL SCAN
No preparation.
PET-CT Scanning (Positron Emission Tomography)
Three days prior stop exercising. Two days before and the day of the test, no cookies, cake or candy (no sugar). No flavored creamers, no jellies, no sugar coated cereals no flavored oatmeal's. Please use sweet and low instead of sugars, and if you like soda-please drink diet soda only. The evening before the test, no fresh fruit, beer or wine. The day of the test, no solid food four hours before the test, but you can have water up until the testing time. Please wear pants with an elastic waste band no zippers.
